Grant and Jackson Mullins are military dependents. They grew up in a world shaped by deployment schedules, base relocations, and the quiet sacrifices that military families make without being asked. They saw firsthand what happens when a family gives everything to service and comes home to a house that needs more than they can manage alone.
That's where the idea took root. Not from a textbook or a nonprofit seminar — from lived experience. The Mullins brothers understood something most people talk about but few act on: the people who serve our communities deserve a community that serves them back.
They started small. A few classmates, a couple of rakes, one veteran's overgrown yard. But the model worked — students wanted meaningful work, and families needed real help. HomeWork 4 Heroes grew because the need was obvious and the solution was simple: show up, do the work, and let the results speak.
Today, the organization mobilizes high school and college students across Central Virginia to deliver free home maintenance, yard work, and relocation assistance to Veterans, First Responders, Teachers, and their families. Every project is hands-on. Every volunteer is a student. Every family served is someone who gave to this community first.
