Person standing on the front porch of a home in warm natural light

You've Served Your Community. Let Us Take Care of Your Home.

Asking for Help Is Not a Weakness. It's a Next Step.

You've spent years giving to this community — running into emergencies, standing in front of classrooms, serving overseas. The house projects piling up aren't a failure. They're the natural cost of a life spent focused on something bigger than yourself. HomeWork 4 Heroes exists so you don't carry that weight alone.

Eligibility

Who We Serve

HomeWork 4 Heroes provides free home maintenance and support services to the following groups in Central Virginia:

Active duty, retired, or honorably discharged service members and their immediate families.

First Responders

Firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, law enforcement officers, and their immediate families.

Teachers & Educators

Current public and private school teachers, instructional staff, and their immediate families.

Service Area: Central Virginia — Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Greene, and Nelson counties, as well as Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Augusta County, Staunton, and Orange County.

If you're unsure whether you qualify, reach out. We'd rather answer a question than miss someone who needs help.

Know someone who qualifies but won't ask for themselves? That's exactly what nominations are for — tell us about them below.

The Process

Three Steps to Getting Help

1

Submit a Request — or a Nomination

Fill out the form that fits: request help for yourself, or nominate a veteran, first responder, or teacher you know. Include contact info and a description of what's needed. Photos help us plan, but they're not required.

2

We Review & Match

Our team reviews the request, confirms eligibility, and matches the family with a volunteer crew that fits the project. If it came in as a nomination, we reach out directly to the person nominated before scheduling anything.

3

Volunteers Show Up

A student team arrives on the scheduled date with tools and materials. You don't pay a dime. You don't lift a finger unless you want to.

Nominations Welcome

Nominate Someone Who Needs Help

Most of the veterans, first responders, and teachers we serve never would have asked for themselves. A lot of our best matches start with someone else noticing — a neighbor, a family member, a coworker, a fellow veteran — and speaking up on their behalf. If you know someone who qualifies but is unlikely to reach out on their own, tell us about them below. We'll take it from there.

Common Questions

Is this really free?

Yes. HomeWork 4 Heroes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All services are provided at no cost to eligible families. Our projects are funded by donations and community sponsors.

Can I submit this for someone else instead of myself?

Yes — nominations are one of the most common ways we find people to help. If you know a veteran, first responder, or teacher who could use support but might not ask for themselves, use the "Nominate Someone" form above and share as much detail as you can. We'll reach out to the person nominated to confirm eligibility and next steps before anything is scheduled.

How long does a project take?

Most projects are completed in a single day. Larger or multi-phase projects may require additional visits, which we'll coordinate with you in advance.

What if I need help again later?

You can submit a new request anytime. Repeat requests are welcome — our goal is sustained support, not a one-time visit.

Do I need to be home during the project?

We prefer it, but we understand schedules. We'll work out the details when we confirm your project date.

What if my project doesn't fit your categories?

Submit a request anyway and describe what you need. If we can't help directly, we'll try to connect you with someone who can.

You Don't Have to Do This Alone

Asking for help after a lifetime of giving it isn't easy. We know that. HomeWork 4 Heroes was founded by military dependents who watched their own family navigate that tension. This organization exists because no one who serves should have to struggle with the basics alone.
