Earl Davis is 71 years old. He served two tours with the U.S. Army before coming home to Fluvanna County, where he's lived for nearly forty years. Last spring, the fence along the back of his property collapsed — a combination of rot, winter ice, and the kind of deferred maintenance that piles up when you're managing a bad hip alone.
His daughter called HomeWork 4 Heroes after seeing a post in a local Facebook group. Three weeks later, a crew of nine high school students showed up on a Saturday morning with tools, lumber, and more energy than Earl had seen on his property in years.
By noon, the fence was rebuilt. The overgrowth along the property line was cleared. A section of loose porch railing that had been worrying him for months was repaired and repainted. Earl made a pot of coffee and watched from the porch. "I didn't know what to do with myself," he said. "They just worked."
His daughter sent a handwritten note to the organization the following week. She said her father had seemed lighter ever since — like something that had been weighing on him for a long time had finally been lifted.
