Free Home Maintenance for the People Who Serve Our Communities

Every project starts with a family that needs help and a team of student volunteers ready to deliver it. We don't write checks or make referrals — we show up with tools, materials, and the energy to get the job done.

Home Repairs

Leaking faucets. Broken steps. A porch railing that's been loose for two years. These are the projects that pile up when life is spent serving others. Our volunteer crews handle basic home repairs — plumbing fixes, carpentry, painting, weatherproofing, accessibility modifications — so the people who protect and teach our communities can live in homes that work.

Typical Projects

Interior and exterior painting, minor plumbing, fence repair, door and window fixes, ramp installation, handrail repair.

Yard Cleanup

An overgrown yard isn't just an eyesore — it's a signal. It tells a neighbor that someone inside is struggling. Our crews clear, mow, trim, haul, and restore outdoor spaces so that the home looks as cared-for as the person living in it deserves.

Typical Projects

Lawn mowing, hedge trimming, leaf removal, brush clearing, garden bed restoration, mulching.

Snow Removal

When Central Virginia gets hit with winter weather, driveways and walkways become barriers — especially for older veterans and first responders recovering from injuries. Our teams clear snow and ice so no one is trapped inside their own home.

Typical Projects

Driveway clearing, sidewalk shoveling, porch and step de-icing, pathway salting.

Assisted Living & Care Facility Transitions

For a veteran, first responder, or teacher who can no longer manage a move on their own, transitioning to assisted living or an independent care facility can feel overwhelming. Our volunteer crews step in to make it manageable — packing with care, loading and unloading, and setting up the new space so it feels like home from day one.

Typical Projects

Packing and organizing belongings, loading and unloading, furniture setup in the new space, downsizing support.

Pet & Animal Care

When a service member is deployed or a first responder is recovering, the family pet still needs to be walked, fed, and looked after. Our volunteers help with basic animal care so families can focus on what matters most without worrying about their four-legged family members.

Typical Projects

Dog walking, feeding routines, basic grooming, yard cleanup for pet areas.

Waste Disposal

Years of deferred maintenance leave behind more than broken fixtures — they leave piles of debris, old furniture, and accumulated junk that a single family can't haul alone. Our crews handle the heavy lifting: sorting, loading, hauling, and disposing of waste so the home is clean, safe, and functional.

Typical Projects

Junk removal, debris hauling, garage cleanout, shed clearing, post-renovation cleanup.

Student Ambassadors

Meet the Volunteers Leading the Way

These students don't just show up on project days — they recruit teams, coordinate logistics, and represent HomeWork 4 Heroes at their schools and in their communities. They're the reason this organization works.

Fun Fact: My family has three generations of Marines who have honorably served this country.

"Serving others in the community is important to me and it is at the heart of Covenant's Christian liberal arts education. I'm excited for the opportunity to be a student ambassador leading a chapter of HomeWork 4 Heroes at my school, encouraging my classmates to extend themselves to the wider Central Virginia community."

Fun Fact: I've been taking on jobs helping neighbors with pets and yard work to earn money since I was ten.

"I enjoy playing baseball, soccer, and swimming and participating in youth group at my church. I've been part of community service projects for a couple of years and enjoy helping others out. I'm looking forward to serving the community by bringing together friends and teammates as an ambassador to do more projects for veterans."
